Reflection on my micro-teaching 1

Well, today, Tuesday November 27th, 2012, I applied my lesson plan on Subject pronouns with G3, the three sections. The three periods were highly successful, especially after my micro teaching in the Methodology; but, with minimal changes. I used the direct instruction strategy .The strength of my lesson was in particular  by using gestural prompts for demonstrating the pronouns and then allow students to act them out in front of  their peers. I made sure that instructions were very clear, and I tested it from time to time through their feedback. Also the time management was very good .In reality, I needed to explain exercise 2, which was their homework, because most of my students’ parents   don’t know English. I made sure to keep the space, most of the time, for sometimes I need to check on closely particular students. I used the power point presentation at the beginning in my real class in order to gain their attention. It worked better than in my Micro-teaching. The warm up activity was very important to introduce my topic in the right direction. I didn't check their previous work, because in fact this the first grammar lesson for my student. I followed exactly my lesson plan using the deductive method of teaching. I did present and structure the new content .Every while I make sure students are participating and responding. Usually I am very nice to my students, but firm. Not to forget, in my micro-teaching I didn't practice group work, but in my class I made sure to involve my students into group work, thank you a lot Dr.

  1. Lina has a pleasant personality that enables student to feel confident and safe with her. She was always smiling when demonstrating her lesson. She has good control of her body language as she used lot of gestures to make her students conscious of her objectives while explaining the lesson. She has also good eye contact. Her voice is calm and clear with good control of its pitches and intonations which she used to draw students’ attention. Her voices pitches vary between high and low, strong and weak according to what she wants to emphasizes and stress in her various activities. She engaged all the students in her lesson and encouraged them. She gave positive reinforcement saying words like good and excellent and provided feedback. Her choice of the video was also good.

  3. Lina’s Microteaching
It is not easy to reflect on a friend’s microteaching is as it needs objectivity. Generally speaking, Lina did a good job. Her objectives were clear and all the parts of her lesson plan were included. Her tasks were achieved in almost the specified time frame. She engaged her students and checked their comprehension, had confidence, and good body language. Lina adopted the direct method of teaching where she used drilling and repetition. I prefer if she would have used both the direct and the indirect methods to enrich her instruction and to allow students to engage in different kinds of activities to construct their own knowledge. Although she was organized, she could have prepared more activities on “subject pronouns” instead of jamming all the activities in such a small time period (20 min). Moreover, she could have started her instruction by showing the power point presentation and consider it as an introductory or a warm-up activity. Her lesson plan lacked authentic material and the homework assignment should have been given to students without explanation. I encourage Lina and hope she will do better in her next microteaching.

  6. Lina, I enjoyed your lesson from the first minute. You snapped into this smiley/friendly attitude which game me the feeling that I was a child in your class. The way you clearly introduced your lesson about personal noun was under the right pace and wording which suited the age group of grade 2. Giving continues example on each student was a good technique to keep everyone's attention throughout the lesson. Writing on the board while explain also widened the range of student's understating of what you were talking about. You stimulated their senses through, the colorful power point presentation, writing on the board, and verbally going over the personal pronouns. Not to mention the written activity that went parallel to you lesson. My only comment is on how fast you went over the homework during the end of the lesson, which made it unclear and hard to understand what was asked of the students. However, I do understand it's mainly because you wanted to finish your presentation without exceeding the time given, which isn’t easy. Otherwise, good job!
